Roncesvalles Village is a neighbourhood in the downtown Toronto area. It surrounds the commercial shopping area along Roncesvalles Avenue in the city. It is the center of the Polish community in Toronto. The name Roncesvalles Village is a name intended to form a unique identity for the area in an effort to increase commerce for local shops and other businesses in the area. The name itself comes from a battle which took place in Roncesvalles in Spain. The Roncesvalles Village Business Improvement Area holds an annual 'Roncesvalles Village Polish Festival' each fall, closing Roncesvalles from High Park Avenue to Howard Park Avenue. It features several kiddie type midway rides, food stands and outdoor musical entertainment, including polka music. The TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) is a prominent part of the Roncesvalles neighbourhood. The smallest store front on Roncesvalles is at 413 Roncesvalles Avenue and is a tiny store front off a building on the street. There are fewer than 10,000 Sphynx cats in the world, and the actual Sphynx cat breed first appeared in an ally on Roncesvalles.
